Just a short post to express how proud we are of the Lowlandstrail and Snowfoots (Danny Bulens) teams to finish their first ever 400km Femundlopet race!!!

A STOR TAKK (GREAT THANKS) to Takk, Alta, Cayenne, Blue, Sitka, Ruben, Bandit and Sox, who all came in to the finish line in great shape. It was a (sometimes very) heavy ride through the mountain terrain area of Femund, Norway, under fairly good wheather conditions.

We will give a more elaborate update in both Dutch and English shortly, but for now we just wanted to let everybody know how very happy and satisfied we are and how much we enjoyed the great atmosphere around yet another fantastic long distance race challenge.

4 en 5 december 2010 - De jaarlijkse Pampa Sleddog Race kende twee extreme dagen voor laaglandse begrippen: de eerste dag was fris koud, winderig en zonnig in een prachtig sneeuwlandschap met harde trails en stuifsneeuw en de tweede dag plotseling volledig tegengesteld nat, vies en waterig koud, met loodzware trails door papperige resten sneeuw en ijs.

Het team was goed op dreef. De hondjes hadden superlol tijdens de eerste run van 24 km op zaterdag en waren indrukwekkend volhardend tijdens de zware tweede evenlange manche op zondag. Beestachtig zwaar was de trail toen en toch maar 10 minuten langzamer. We zijn ronduit erg tevreden met waar ze op dit moment staan!

Verder hebben we op het sociale vlak genoten en gesproken en gelachen met al onze vrienden en kennissen. We bedanken de organisatie, die er steeds bijzonder veel werk in steekt om dit tweedaagse event mogelijk te maken.

Tenslotte waren we blij met de aanwezigheid van Natalie Dirkx: zij maakte als onderdeel van haar studie fotografie een mooie reportage van ons met betrekking tot alles wat zich rondom een training afspeelt. Hieronder alvast een voorproefje van enkele van haar foto's. Er waren trouwens veel meer fotografen: eenieder die mooie foto's heeft gemaakt van ons team en deze wel aan ons zou willen geven willen we vragen contact met ons op te nemen. Bij publicatie op onze website vermelden we uiteraard je naam!

4 and 5 december 2010 - This year's edition of the Pampa Sleddog Race we had two days with extremes quite rare to these lowlands, due to the quick weather change: on Saturday it was chilly cold, sunny and windy in beautiful snowy settings with hard trails and on Sunday it was the complete opposite, with continuous (icy) rains and very heavy trails due to quickly smelting snow.

The team seemed to have a good time. All dogs noticeably had great fun during the first 24 km run on Saturday and were impressive in their endurance and stamina during the second run on Sunday (same distance). The trail was extremely heavy that second day and still they were only 10 minutes slower. We are very content with the shape they're in at the moment and where they stand as a team.

We people members of the team had a great time socially also, enjoying the company of our friends and acquaintances. We thank all folks involved in organising the race: they always put a lot of work in making this two day event possible.

Last but not least we thank Natalie Dirckx: as part of her photography studies she made a beautiful picture report about us regarding everything taking place around a training run. Below some of her pictures. By the way, there were more photopraphers present: anyone that took some nice shots of our team and allows us to publish them, please contact us. Van 12 t/m 14 november vond het jaarlijkse Pampa trainingskamp in Houthalen/Helchteren (België) plaats. Wij arriveerden al op donderdag de 11e om te helpen in de voorbereiding > het uitzetten van de trails.

Over het weer kunnen we kort zijn: we hebben zelden zoveel water uit de hemel zien vallen in zo korte tijd... Eigenlijk heeft het alle vier dagen constant doorgeregend, de vrijdagochtend uitgezonderd. De eerste twee dagen waaide het daarbij ook erg hard (wat op die vrijdagmorgen wel prettig was om de boel wat droog te blazen), later nam de wind af. Koud was het geenszins, zeker niet in het weekeinde, dus dat hemelwater was voor de training eigenlijk juist welkom.

Bij zulk weer kun je gaan klagen en mopperen en bij de pakken neerzitten of zelfs omdraaien naar huis, of je kunt je schouders eronder zetten en er het beste van maken. We kozen voor het laatste: we kwamen immers om de honden te trainen als onderdeel van onze voorbereiding op de Femund en voor hen was het prettig eens een andere trail te zien. Bovendien kan je de natuurlijke omstandigheden nu eenmaal niet kiezen of naar je hand zetten, niet nu en niet tijdens de wedstrijd straks. We zaten droog en warm in ons dappere vouwwagentje, Luna vermaakte zich opperbest, dus we gingen ervoor.

We kunnen alleen maar zeggen dat we een zeer geslaagd trainingskamp hebben gehad: we hebben veel gelopen (vrijdag en zaterdag twee keer per dag) en de honden waren indrukwekkend onder de zeer zware omstandigheden. De pups waren voor het eerst mee en wenden wonderwel snel aan de stake-out en het (helaas wat vele) verblijf in de boxen.

Daarbij was het gezellig: de weersomstandigheden gaven eigenlijk wel een saamhorig gevoel aan de 'die-hards' die er waren (en bleven). Jammer alleen dat de lezing geen doorgang kon vinden: misschien kan deze worden verplaatst naar de wedstrijd?

We kijken er met plezier op terug. Dank aan Mushing Belgium voor de organisatie!

This year's edition of the Pampa training camp in Houthalen/Helchteren (Belgium) took place from 12  till 14 november. We got there the 11th already to help marking the trails.

We can be brief about the weather: we have rarely  seen so much water falling from the sky in such short period of time... In fact it rained all four days straight, only the friday morning excluded. The first two days this heavy rain was accompanied by a very strong wind (which was rather nice that early friday to help blowing everything a little bit dry, or - less wet), which weakened later on. It wasn't cold at all, especially not during the weekend, so in effect the rains were good for the runs.

While confronted with such weather you can either complain and sulk or even turn back home, or you can have a positive attitude and make the best of it. After all, one cannot choose nature's circumstances, not now and not during races. So we chose to have a good time: after all we were there for our training and preparations towards Femund and for the dogs it was nice to see some other trail for a change. We were dry and comfortable in our little brave folding camper, Luna had a great time, so we went for it.

Looking back we can only say we experienced a fortunate training camp with multiple runs (friday and saturday twice a day). The team was impressive under the extremely heavy trail conditions. We took the puppies on this travel for their very first time and they got used to being on the stake-out and in their trailerboxes astonishingly fast.

Morever it was pleasant with the other people: actually the weather conditions gave the 'die-hards' that were present (and stayed on) a funny feeling of solidarity. Only too bad the lecture could not take place: perhaps it can be rescheduled to the Pampa race early December?

So, we had a good time with valuable training. Thanks to Mushing Belgium for the organisation!
